Keep The Country Country!

While on a recent Sanuk video shoot just a couple miles from Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu, we embarked on a beautiful private cove that no resort could compete with. Enclosed by trees, it struck me as an oasis in an otherwise developing area. We then learned that Turtle Bay, just around the corner, has been looking to expand and seeks to build 5 more resorts along the coast from Kawela Bay to Kahuku Point, eliminating the beautiful cove and much much more.

Fortunately, Sanuk’s own Lily Meola (seen below) told us about a group called the Defend Oahu Coalition that has formed and is currently fighting to protect their land from the dangerous effects of large scale development.

This excerpt from the Defend Oahu Coalition internet site explains the possible effects:

“All of this development would drastically affect the nature of our neighborhoods along the rural corridor from Kahalu’u to Waimea Bay and beyond. These neighborhoods serve as a recreational area for the entire island – an escape from the urban sprawl. If Kuilima Resort Company has its way and is allowed to build 3,500 more units, North Shore residents and the people of O’ahu in general can say goodbye to Keeping the Country Country.”

In an interview with Outside Magazine, group leader and Professional Waterman Mark Cunningham explains DOC’s mission and expands on the implications of Turtle Bay’s desire to grow:

Over the years, many people have joined the Defend Oahu Coalition to carry this mission out, including many community residents, environmentalists, activists, and religious leaders. Even singer/surfer Jack Johnson is a strong supporter of the cause:

They are continually looking for support to ‘Keep the Country Country!’ You don’t have to be a resident of Oahu to partake in the cause to keep their shorelines open! The beautiful land of the North Shore is not only for residents, but for all visitors to enjoy. And trust me, if you have ever been to the North Shore, you’ll know exactly why this is such an important mission. So get involved!
